Newberry College is a liberal arts college found in Newberry in the State of South Carolina. The school is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or the ELCA. Newberry College is located on the historic 90 acre campus in Newberry. The college has an average enrollment of just a little over 1,000 students each term. There is a student to faculty ratio of a 14:1.
Newberry's history began in 1828 during the annual meeting of the Lutheran Synod in South Carolina and the surrounding States, almost 30 years before it was even chartered as a college by the State. The new seminary school opened in near Pomaria, South Carolina in 1831. Then in 1834, the school moved to neighboring Lexington, South Carolina and stayed there for over 2 decades. The Synod voted to make the school a degree-granting college in 1854. Then in 1855 a vote was made to move it to Newberry, and in 1856 it was named Newberry College. In 1858, a new preparatory department of the school opened in 1858, and in 1859 the College and Seminary became operational.
In 2007, Newberry College celebrated its 150th Anniversary and dedicated the celebration to the service and educational leadership for the Lutheran Church, the state of South Carolina and the local Newberry community. Then in 2009, the college launched the Newberry FastForward program. The program is an adult degree completion program. The program's unique structure includes a curriculum with limited attendance in campus, a faster accelerated course schedule, and smaller tuition structure for older students looking to get their degree.
Newberry College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I, and it is a member of the South Atlantic Conference or the SAC. The school fields teams in Basketball, Baseball, Cross Country, Golf, Football, Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball and Wrestling.
